Tension mounted in Mothabari, Malda district, West Bengal, following the discovery of the nude body of a suspected rape and murder victim in a cornfield. The incident added to the ongoing tension in Sandeshkhali, where local women have been protesting allegations of sexual harassment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman was subjected to sexual assault and subsequently hacked to death, with her body discarded in the cornfield. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report, which will also confirm if sexual assault occurred.
The victim’s father, a sharecropper, reported her missing late Wednesday evening. Despite a search by family members throughout the night, the discovery of her body in the cornfield was only made on Thursday morning. The family has filed complaints with the local police.
Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell chief and observer for West Bengal, launched a scathing attack on the state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in response to the incident. Malviya criticized the perceived lack of security for women in the state, accusing the government of failing to prosecute criminals affiliated with the ruling TMC party.
“Bengal is witnessing anarchy. The Chief Minister and her criminal police force have not only failed to provide any sense of security to women but are also actively working to deny justice to the victims. Mamata Banerjee is a curse for the women of West Bengal,” Malviya asserted in a tweet. The incident highlights the urgent need for effective measures to ensure the safety of women and address the rising concerns of violence against them.
