A disturbing case of child abduction has come to light in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of minors in the state. On June 20, 2024, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from her home in Valanjavazhy, Ambalapuzha, by Mehmood Mian, a 38-year-old man from Bihar.

According to police reports, Mian, who was renting accommodation next to the victim’s family, took advantage of the girl being alone while her mother was at work. He allegedly promised to marry the child, took 50,000 rupees from the house, and fled with her.

Swift action by Kerala police led to Mian’s arrest at Balharshah railway station in Maharashtra, as he attempted to transport the girl to Bihar. The child was safely recovered and returned to her family after counseling and court proceedings.

This case has sparked discussions about the vulnerability of children in communities with high numbers of migrant workers. It also raises questions about the need for stronger safeguards to protect minors from exploitation.

Local authorities have praised the efficient work of the police team led by Inspector Pratheesh Kumar in swiftly resolving the case. However, community leaders are calling for more comprehensive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring child safety, particularly in areas with transient populations. It underscores the need for increased vigilance, community awareness, and robust child protection mechanisms to safeguard the most vulnerable members of society.
