In a distressing case of forced conversion, Mujahid Khan (45) has been booked for allegedly attempting to convert his Hindu wife, Rekha (35) (name changed), to Islam and threatening her with dire consequences when she refused. The Kalghatgi police station in Hubli, Dharwad district, has registered a case against Khan following Rekha’s complaint.

Rekha, who currently resides with her grandmother in Kalaghatagi, was previously employed at a private company in Bangalore, where she met Mujahid Khan. Their professional relationship developed into a friendship and later a romantic relationship, culminating in their marriage in 2017. However, Rekha was unaware that Mujahid was already married with four children.

Initially, their marriage seemed harmonious, but soon Mujahid began pressuring Rekha to convert to Islam. When she resisted, conflicts arose, leading to severe strain in their relationship. Feeling unsafe, Rekha returned to Kalaghatagi, but Mujahid followed her, continuing his threats and harassment.

Mujahid’s threats escalated to the point where he declared, “I will stab you wherever you go.” Terrified, Rekha sought assistance from the Sri Ram Sena helpline, an organization known for supporting victims of forced conversions, often referred to as “love jihad.” With their support, Rekha filed a formal complaint against Mujahid at the Kalaghatagi police station.

Kalaghatagi police inspector Shrishaila Koujalagi confirmed receiving Rekha’s complaint on Thursday. Based on her accusations, a case has been registered against Mujahid Khan under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC 1860).

Rekha, who was working in a real estate firm owned by Mujahid in RT Nagar, Bengaluru, has also stated that Mujahid harassed her for over a year, forcing her to relocate to her native place. Despite her relocation, the harassment continued, leading to the FIR being filed.

Inspector Koujalagi added that they will summon Mujahid Khan for enquiry based on the charges filed by Rekha. The police are taking the matter seriously and are committed to ensuring Rekha’s safety and justice.
