In a disturbing sequence of events, Rohit Thorat, a Hindu Dalit activist, sustained severe head injuries in Lohiya Nagar, Pune, following a brutal attack by a gang led by Afridi Sheikh alias Budha, Sadiq Sajja, Izaz Sheikh, and four others. This marks the second assault on a Dalit Matang youth leader in the area within just 72 hours, intensifying concerns over the safety and security of activists in the city.

The attackers used sharp weapons in their attempt to kill Thorat, who is now recovering from his injuries. This latest incident comes on the heels of another horrific attack where Akshay Dhavare, another Dalit youth leader, had his fingers chopped off by a gang identified as A Khan, Salman Balli Sheikh, Asmal Patel, Yousuf, and Aasif Mendha. Dhavare is still fighting for his life in a hospital.

These back-to-back attacks have highlighted the escalating violence in Pune, once known as an educational and intellectual hub for over 500 years. The rise in crime and drug-related activities has left the city’s residents in a state of fear and anger.

Critics have pointed to the Pune City Police’s inability to control the situation, with notorious gangs, drug peddlers, and unruly drivers operating with apparent impunity. Calls for action have intensified, with citizens demanding accountability from law enforcement and immediate measures to restore order.

Public figures, including MP and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, are being urged to intervene. Many are calling for the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner of Police and other officials deemed complicit in shielding criminals, to restore Pune’s pride and ensure the safety of its residents.

The situation remains tense as the community rallies for justice and protection against the increasing wave of violence targeting activists who stand up against radical elements and criminal activities.
