(Reported as seen)

On the evening of July 11th, Islamists allegedly attacked the traditional Kalas Yatra in Bati village, under Dangapara Gram Panchayat in Jiyaganj. The Kalas Yatra is a long-standing tradition where Hindu residents of the village collect water from the Bhairav River before the Kirtan and Yajna ceremonies.

According to reports, the trouble began when the Kalas Yatra procession reached the area in front of a local mosque. Some Islamists objected to the procession passing by the mosque, insisting that it should be rerouted. A scuffle ensued, escalating into violence as Islamists began attacking the unarmed Hindu participants.

Eyewitnesses reported that Islamists hurled stones and bricks from nearby rooftops and used sticks and sharp weapons to assault the devotees. Many Hindus were injured in the attack. Despite the presence of a few police personnel, they were unable to control the violent mob and protect the procession.

Locals transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. As of now, no arrests have been reported, adding to the frustration and fear within the Hindu community.

This incident is particularly poignant given the demographic changes in Murshidabad. Once a Hindu-majority district, Hindus are now in the minority, reflecting a significant demographic shift over the years. The attack on the Kalas Yatra underscores the increasing tensions and the vulnerability of the Hindu community in the region.

The Hindu community is calling for swift action against the perpetrators and increased security to prevent such incidents in the future. This attack highlights the urgent need for measures to ensure communal harmony and protect religious traditions in West Bengal.
