Islamist Attack on Hindu Minorities [Dhaka, Bangladesh]

In a disturbing continuation of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, Islamists launched an attack in Dhaka, leaving many injured. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM in Dhaka’s Miranjilla Colony when Magistrate Muhammad Moniruzzaman visited to oversee the rehabilitation of Hindu minorities in a newly built center.

The visit faced strong opposition from local councillor Muhammad Auwal Hossain and his associates, who soon turned violent. The attackers hurled stones and bricks at the Hindu residents, vandalizing homes and a Hindu temple in the process.

The brutal assault resulted in approximately 60 Hindu individuals sustaining injuries. The victims were promptly taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where many received treatment and were subsequently released.

Miranjilla Colony, part of the Dhaka South City Corporation, is home to the Harijan community. A month prior, the corporation initiated an eviction drive in the area, demolishing many houses. However, following nationwide outrage, the eviction drive was halted, and plans were made to rehabilitate the displaced individuals. Despite these efforts, local Islamist elements, allegedly supported by Awami League leaders, have been vehemently opposing the rehabilitation initiative.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to protect vulnerable communities from such targeted violence.
