In a disturbing incident in Gujarat’s Bharuch district, Altaf Hussain Sheikh was arrested for assaulting Jain Sadhvis with a belt while they were on their way to Vihar on the Tham-Derol Highway. The attack occurred after the Sadhvis requested Sheikh to maintain distance due to their practice of austerity and maintaining separation from men.
On May 28, six Shwetambar Jain Sadhvis were traveling for Vihar from Bharuch. Initially accompanied by a Vihar Sevak, who returned after a few kilometers, the group was then followed by Sheikh. As they passed through Tham village near Derol village Patiya on Jambusar road, Sheikh began chasing and shouting at them. When the Sadhvis asked him to keep his distance, he became enraged, kicked one of the female monks, and then attacked them with a belt.
Satishbhai Rathod, a local villager, witnessed the assault and intervened. Rathod managed to catch Sheikh and informed the Bharuch Taluka Police Station. Despite an initial escape attempt by Sheikh, who jumped onto a tempo, Rathod’s alertness led to the police arresting him near Vagra Chokdi. The Bharuch Taluka Police are currently investigating the incident.
This incident has caused significant outrage among the local Jain community and others. The assault on religious figures, particularly those who practice non-violence and austerity, is seen as a severe affront.
