In a disturbing incident on June 17th, a Hindu family in Pune’s Yerwada area was viciously attacked by a group of individuals from the Muslim community, resulting in severe injuries and prompting police action. The incident unfolded when a 3-year-old Hindu girl was playing in her family’s courtyard and was accidentally hit by a goat belonging to Muslim residents in the neighborhood, meant for slaughter during Bakrid.

According to the complaint filed by Ravi Vishwakarma, the girl’s family approached the boys playing with the goats, urging them to be cautious as their play could endanger children. This plea escalated into a heated argument, during which the boys allegedly assaulted the Vishwakarma family members. Matters worsened when the boys summoned Monty Sayyed and Jameer Sayyed, adults from their community, who arrived and proceeded to physically assault the Hindu family. The attackers reportedly used stones, rods, and sticks to inflict harm.

The situation spiraled out of control until the Pune Police intervened, rescuing the family and transporting them to Sassoon Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Subsequently, the police registered an FIR against Monty Sayyed, Jameer Sayyed, and three minors under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), and 337 of the Indian Penal Code.

OpIndia obtained CCTV footage capturing around 10-20 individuals gathering around the Hindu family during the assault. Ravi Vishwakarma, speaking to OpIndia, confirmed the details of the incident and expressed dissatisfaction with the current detainment of 12 individuals involved. He emphasized the need for strict action against all perpetrators and called for justice for his family.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and demands for justice in Pune, underscoring tensions around communal interactions during religious festivals and the imperative for community harmony and legal adherence to prevent such escalations in the future. Authorities continue to investigate the case to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence of such violent incidents.
