In a tragic case of murder following religious conversion, Mohammad Alam (35) from Hapur has been arrested for the brutal killing of his 33-year-old partner, Pooja Devi, in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. This incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the alleged neglect of the victim’s family by political organizations.
According to reports, Mohammad Alam had been in a live-in relationship with Pooja Devi for at least four years. Six months ago, he coerced her into converting to Islam and performed Nikah with her. Despite being already married with four children, Alam did not want to continue living with Pooja. On July 24, 2024, he murdered her and disposed of her body in the Ganga canal. Alam has confessed to the crime, but Pooja’s body has not yet been found.
Alam’s heinous acts extended beyond Pooja. He also allegedly sexually harassed Pooja’s 11-year-old daughter from a previous marriage. The minor revealed these abuses after her mother’s death, adding to the horror of the situation.
Sumit Kumar, Pooja’s brother-in-law, and a member of the Bhim Army—a Dalit organization led by Nagina MP Chandrashekhar alias Ravan—expressed his frustration over the lack of support from the organization. He accused the Bhim Army of prioritizing political considerations over justice for Pooja, claiming they did not want to lose Muslim votes in the upcoming Ghaziabad Sadar bypolls. This allegation points to a larger issue of political maneuvering and community appeasement at the expense of justice.
The brutal murder and subsequent revelations have caused significant distress within the local community. Hindu organizations and activists are demanding strict action against Mohammad Alam and a thorough investigation into the matter. The community’s response highlights the need for greater protection and support for vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children.
The police have registered a case against Mohammad Alam and are continuing their investigation. Despite his confession, the search for Pooja’s body remains ongoing. Authorities are also looking into the allegations of sexual harassment against Pooja’s minor daughter to ensure comprehensive justice.
This case underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and violence. It also highlights the critical role of political and social organizations in supporting victims and ensuring justice.
