In a troubling incident in Rasulpur village, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, a wedding procession was violently disrupted on July 15, 2024, when a Muslim mob pelted stones at the Dalit groom’s procession. The conflict arose after a dispute over DJ music played during the wedding.

The confrontation began on the night of July 14, when tensions flared between Hindu Dalits and local Muslims over the volume and presence of DJ music at the wedding of Sachin Jatav. The altercation, initially settled without major incident, reignited the next morning as the wedding procession commenced.

The mob, angered by the ongoing music, began hurling stones at the procession, leading to injuries among several attendees, including women. Casteist slurs were reportedly used by the attackers against the Dalits during the assault. Hariram Jatav, a relative of the groom, filed a complaint against 12 individuals, including both men and women, accusing them of stone-pelting and making derogatory comments.

Following the complaint, an FIR was lodged, and three suspects were taken into custody. The local police, led by Circle Officer Mawana and CO Saurabh Singh, intervened to restore order and ensure the safety of the remaining wedding guests. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, and additional police personnel were deployed in the village to maintain peace.

Rural SP Kamlesh Bahadur confirmed that Hariram Jatav’s complaint included charges against 16 named individuals and eight unidentified suspects. The police are continuing their investigation and conducting searches to apprehend the remaining accused. Despite the escalation, authorities have managed to stabilize the situation, and the village is currently under heightened surveillance to prevent further incidents.

This event highlights the urgent need for community dialogue and effective law enforcement to address and resolve conflicts peacefully, especially during significant cultural and religious celebrations.
