In a disturbing incident on Sunday night, five Hindu temples were vandalized in Bankra town in Howrah district of West Bengal. The act of vandalism coincided with the Shab-e-Barat celebrations on February 25th. BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari took to social media to inform about the incident, stating that miscreants had targeted Sanatani Temples.
In a tweet, Adhikari expressed concern over the continuous reluctance of the West Bengal Police to take action against those involved in the vandalism of Hindu temples. He urged the Commissioner of Howrah city police and the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal to swiftly arrest the culprits and restore normalcy in the area.
CCTV footage shared by Adhikari reportedly showed young boys wearing skull caps involved in the temple vandalism. Local Hindus, upon learning about the incident, staged a protest on Monday morning, blocking rail lines and demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
The protesters were met with a significant police presence aimed at maintaining law and order. The incident adds to the series of violent events in the state, with recent protests in Sandeshkhali against land grabbing, non-payment of wages, and sexual violence allegedly committed by Trinamool Congress members.
The ongoing tensions in West Bengal highlight concerns about religious harmony and the safety of religious institutions. The demand for prompt and effective action against those responsible for such acts of violence remains a key issue in ensuring peace and communal harmony in the region.
